Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

Meaning

Autoimmune Thyroid Disease (AITD) encompasses a group of conditions, most notably Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, where the body’s immune system mistakenly targets and attacks the thyroid gland. This pathological process leads to either chronic inflammation and eventual underactivity (hypothyroidism) or overstimulation and excessive hormone production (hyperthyroidism). Clinical diagnosis relies on identifying elevated levels of specific autoantibodies, such as anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb) or anti-thyroglobulin (TgAb), in conjunction with TSH and thyroid hormone levels. Recognizing AITD is paramount because it represents a significant portion of all thyroid dysfunction observed in clinical practice.
