Autoimmune Thyroid

Meaning

Autoimmune thyroid describes conditions where the body’s immune system mistakenly targets the thyroid gland, causing its dysfunction. This immune misdirection leads to chronic inflammation and damage, impairing the gland’s ability to produce essential hormones. Common forms include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, typically causing hypothyroidism, and Graves’ disease, leading to hyperthyroidism.
