Autoimmune Surveillance

Meaning

Autoimmune surveillance describes the physiological process where the immune system continuously monitors the body’s tissues for signs of self-reactivity or damage, particularly in relation to self-antigens. This vital function involves regulatory T cells and other immune checkpoints that ensure immune responses are correctly targeted toward foreign invaders while maintaining tolerance to healthy self-structures. When this surveillance mechanism fails, the resulting loss of self-tolerance can precipitate autoimmune endocrinopathies.
