Autoimmune Disease

Meaning

A pathological condition arising when the body’s immune system mistakenly identifies its own healthy tissues and organs as foreign threats, subsequently launching an inflammatory and destructive response against them. These disorders reflect a breakdown in immunological tolerance, leading to chronic inflammation and damage in targeted tissues. Examples within endocrinology include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Type 1 diabetes, where specific hormone-producing glands are attacked.
