Autocrine Loop

Meaning

An Autocrine Loop is a specific type of cell signaling mechanism where a cell secretes a signaling molecule, such as a hormone or growth factor, that subsequently binds to receptors located on its own plasma membrane. This self-stimulatory action allows the cell to regulate its own growth, function, and survival in a highly localized manner. While a necessary process for normal tissue maintenance, a dysregulated autocrine loop can contribute to pathological states, including the autonomous growth characteristic of certain tumors.
