Autoantibody Production

Meaning

Autoantibody production refers to the generation of antibodies by the immune system that mistakenly target and bind to the body’s own proteins, cells, or tissues, which are normally recognized as self. This immunological error is a defining characteristic of autoimmune diseases, leading to chronic inflammation and tissue damage. The resulting autoantibodies can either directly destroy cells or interfere with normal physiological functions, such as hormone signaling. Clinical assessment of these antibodies is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring autoimmune conditions across various organ systems.
