Autoantibodies

Meaning

Autoantibodies are specialized protein molecules, produced mistakenly by the body’s own immune system, that are directed against and react with self-antigens, such as tissues, cells, or organs. These immunological agents are the central pathological drivers in autoimmune diseases, a significant category that includes many endocrine disorders. The presence and titer of specific autoantibodies in the circulation serve as critical diagnostic and prognostic indicators in clinical practice.
