Atypical Femoral Fracture

Meaning

An Atypical Femoral Fracture is a rare, low-energy break occurring in the subtrochanteric region or the shaft (diaphysis) of the femur, distinct from common osteoporotic fractures which typically involve the femoral neck or spine. These fractures are characterized by a transverse or short oblique pattern on radiographic imaging, often accompanied by a localized thickening of the bone cortex. Patients may experience prodromal thigh or groin pain for weeks or months prior to the complete fracture event. Recognizing these unique features is crucial for appropriate clinical management, especially in patients undergoing long-term pharmacological therapy.
