Attention Switching

Meaning

Attention switching, or attentional shifting, is a core executive function describing the brain’s ability to consciously or unconsciously disengage attention from one stimulus or task and re-engage it with another. This cognitive flexibility is essential for adapting behavior in dynamic environments and is critical for productivity and safety. In the context of hormonal health, the efficiency of this process is significantly modulated by the balance of neurohormones and neurotransmitters. Impaired switching can manifest as cognitive rigidity or distractibility, often linked to stress-induced hormonal fluctuations.
