Attention Control Systems

Meaning

Attention Control Systems are the complex, interconnected neural networks responsible for selectively processing relevant information while suppressing distracting stimuli. These systems are fundamental cognitive architectures that govern an individual’s capacity to focus, shift, and sustain mental effort. Clinically, their efficiency dictates executive function, learning capacity, and overall cognitive throughput. They are generally categorized into distinct networks, including the dorsal and ventral attention systems, each with specialized roles in goal-directed versus stimulus-driven attention.
