Atherosclerotic Plaque Stability

Meaning

Atherosclerotic plaque stability refers to the structural integrity and resistance to rupture of a lipid-laden lesion within an arterial wall. A stable plaque possesses a thick fibrous cap and a relatively small, quiescent lipid core, making it less prone to mechanical stress and inflammatory degradation. Conversely, an unstable or vulnerable plaque features a thin fibrous cap, a large necrotic lipid core, and significant inflammatory cell infiltration, rendering it highly susceptible to rupture and subsequent thrombotic events.
