Atherosclerotic Disease

Meaning

Atherosclerotic disease, commonly referred to as atherosclerosis, is a progressive, chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the hardening and narrowing of arteries due to the accumulation of plaque. This plaque, composed of lipids, cholesterol, calcium, and cellular debris, forms within the artery’s inner lining, the endothelium. Clinically, it represents the foundational pathology for major cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction and stroke. The insidious progression of this arterial wall thickening compromises blood flow, thereby impairing oxygen and nutrient delivery to vital organs.
