Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease

Meaning

A progressive, systemic pathological condition characterized by the insidious accumulation of lipids, cholesterol, calcium, and cellular debris within the inner walls of medium and large arteries, culminating in the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. This disease process results in the gradual hardening and narrowing of the arterial lumen, critically impairing blood flow and significantly elevating the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction and stroke. The intricate interplay between chronic inflammation, dyslipidemia, and hormonal status is a critical driver of its initiation and progression.
