Atherosclerosis

Meaning

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the progressive hardening and narrowing of arteries due to the accumulation of plaque within the vessel walls. This pathological process involves the buildup of cholesterol, fatty substances, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin. It significantly compromises arterial elasticity and blood flow, serving as the primary underlying cause for serious cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction and stroke. Hormonal imbalances, particularly declines in protective hormones like estrogen, can accelerate the development of this condition.
