Atherosclerosis Risk

Meaning

Atherosclerosis risk quantifies the probability of an individual developing or experiencing clinical events related to the progressive, chronic inflammatory disease of the arterial wall known as atherosclerosis. This pathology involves the accumulation of lipid plaques, fibrous elements, and calcification within the intima layer of medium and large arteries. Assessing this risk involves evaluating a constellation of established factors, including dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and chronic hormonal dysregulation. Clinically, managing this risk is paramount for the prevention of myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.
