Atherosclerosis Initiation Marker

Meaning

An Atherosclerosis Initiation Marker is a measurable biochemical or structural indicator in the body that signals the earliest detectable stages of vascular dysfunction preceding clinical cardiovascular events. These markers often reflect endothelial damage, subclinical inflammation, or the very first accumulation of lipids within the arterial wall. Examples include high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), specific adhesion molecules, and oxidized phospholipids. Identifying these markers allows for primary prevention strategies before significant, irreversible plaque burden develops.
