Atherogenic Profile

Meaning

An aggregation of adverse metabolic and lipid markers observed in a patient, significantly increasing the risk for developing atherosclerosis, which is the hardening and narrowing of arteries. This clinical picture often includes elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), particularly small dense LDL particles, high triglycerides, and low levels of protective high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The presence of this profile signals a state of dyslipidemia that contributes substantially to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
