Atherogenic Particles

Meaning

Atherogenic Particles are specific lipoprotein species circulating in the blood that possess the biochemical capacity to initiate and promote the formation of atherosclerotic plaque within the arterial intima. These agents, which notably include small, dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) and lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)), are highly susceptible to oxidation and subsequent retention in the subendothelial space. The clinical presence of elevated atherogenic particles signifies a substantially increased cardiovascular risk profile for the individual.
