Atherogenic Index of Plasma

Meaning

The Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) is a logarithmically transformed ratio of the plasma concentrations of triglycerides (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). This index serves as a powerful, integrated marker in clinical practice for assessing the risk of developing atherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular disease. AIP provides a more comprehensive view of lipoprotein metabolism and dyslipidemia compared to traditional, isolated lipid panel components. A higher calculated value signifies a greater imbalance between pro-atherogenic and anti-atherogenic lipid particles, directly correlating with increased metabolic risk.
