Assisted Reproductive Technology

Meaning

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) encompasses a collection of medical procedures used to treat infertility by handling both sperm and eggs outside of the human body. These advanced techniques involve the surgical removal of eggs from a woman’s ovaries, combining them with sperm in a laboratory, and then returning them to the woman’s body or surrogates. The primary goal of ART is to achieve a viable pregnancy when conventional methods have failed or are unsuitable. Common ART methods include in vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT). The use of ART is often preceded by hormonal stimulation protocols to optimize ovarian egg production.
