Assay Heterogeneity

Meaning

Assay heterogeneity refers to the significant variability in results obtained when measuring the same analyte, such as a specific hormone, using different laboratory methods or assays. This lack of standardization means that a hormone level reported by one clinical laboratory might not be directly comparable to the value reported by another, even when using the same sample. Recognizing this variation is critical for accurate clinical interpretation, especially near diagnostic thresholds. This variability presents a challenge in establishing universally consistent clinical action thresholds.
