Asprosin

Meaning

Asprosin is a recently identified protein hormone, or adipokine, that is cleaved from the Fibrillin-1 protein and secreted primarily by white adipose tissue, acting as a crucial regulator of glucose homeostasis. This endocrine signal travels to the liver, where it rapidly stimulates the production and release of glucose into the bloodstream. Elevated circulating levels of Asprosin are commonly observed in patients with insulin resistance, obesity, and Type 2 diabetes, suggesting its role as a key contributor to chronic hyperglycemia. Its discovery has positioned it as a novel and significant therapeutic target in metabolic endocrinology.
