Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)

Meaning

Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), also known as serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), is an enzyme predominantly found within the cytoplasm and mitochondria of hepatocytes, cardiac muscle cells, skeletal muscle, kidneys, brain, and red blood cells. Its primary function involves catalyzing the reversible transfer of an amino group from aspartate to alpha-ketoglutarate, producing oxaloacetate and glutamate, a crucial step in amino acid metabolism and gluconeogenesis.
