Aspartate Aminotransferase

Meaning

Aspartate Aminotransferase, commonly known as AST, is an enzyme found in various tissues throughout the body, with high concentrations present in the liver, heart, skeletal muscle, and kidneys. Clinically, a measurement of serum AST activity is utilized as a diagnostic marker, often alongside other enzymes, to assess tissue damage. While frequently associated with liver health, elevated levels may also signal injury to cardiac or muscular tissues. Its non-specific distribution requires careful clinical correlation with other biomarkers.
