Asialoglycoprotein Receptor

Meaning

The Asialoglycoprotein Receptor (ASGPR) is a C-type lectin primarily expressed on the sinusoidal surface of hepatocytes, which are the main functional cells of the liver. This receptor plays a crucial physiological role in recognizing and binding glycoproteins that have lost their terminal sialic acid residues, thereby exposing underlying galactose or N-acetylgalactosamine sugars. Clinically, its function is integral to the clearance of circulating desialylated proteins, including certain hormones or hormone-binding globulins, from the bloodstream.
