Ascertainment Bias

Meaning

Ascertainment bias, a critical concept in clinical epidemiology, describes a systematic distortion in the results of a study that arises from a non-random or flawed method of recruiting or identifying the study population or data. This form of bias occurs when the probability of a subject being included in a research cohort is directly related to both their exposure status and the outcome of interest. In hormonal research, this can lead to a misleading conclusion about the true relationship between an endocrine factor and a specific health outcome.
