Arteriogenesis

Meaning

Arteriogenesis is the natural physiological process involving the growth and remodeling of pre-existing, small collateral arterioles into larger, functional collateral arteries. This distinct form of neovascularization enhances blood flow to a downstream tissue when a main artery is partially or completely occluded, such as during a chronic atherosclerotic event. It serves as a vital, protective compensatory mechanism to mitigate tissue ischemia and maintain organ perfusion.
