Arterial Stiffness

Meaning

Arterial Stiffness describes a pathological loss of elasticity in the walls of arteries, particularly the large elastic arteries like the aorta. This stiffening increases the pulse wave velocity and augments systolic blood pressure, placing greater mechanical stress on the cardiovascular system. Quantitatively, it is often assessed via measures like pulse wave velocity or compliance indices. This physiological change is a significant predictor of adverse cardiovascular outcomes.
