Arterial Remodeling

Meaning

Arterial remodeling represents the dynamic structural and functional adaptation of the vascular wall in response to long-term changes in blood flow, pressure, or circulating endocrine signals. This process involves alterations in the extracellular matrix, smooth muscle cell phenotype, and endothelial integrity, profoundly influencing vessel stiffness and luminal diameter. Maladaptive remodeling, often driven by chronic hypertension or insulin resistance, can lead to arterial stiffening and contribute significantly to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Understanding this physiological plasticity is central to mitigating vascular aging and promoting longevity.
