Arterial Pliancy

Meaning

Arterial pliancy, also referred to as arterial compliance, is the essential physiological capacity of the arterial walls to distend and recoil in response to changes in blood pressure. This elasticity allows the large arteries to absorb the systolic pressure wave, converting the pulsatile flow from the heart into a smoother, continuous flow throughout the periphery. Diminished pliancy, known as arterial stiffness, is a crucial early indicator of cardiovascular pathology and vascular aging. Maintaining optimal pliancy is fundamental for minimizing cardiac workload and preserving end-organ perfusion.
