Arterial Plaque Progression

Meaning

Arterial Plaque Progression refers to the continuous pathological process where atherosclerotic lesions, or plaques, within the arterial walls increase in size, complexity, and volume over time. This chronic inflammatory state involves the accumulation of lipids, cholesterol, calcium, and fibrous connective tissue within the intima of medium and large arteries. The enlargement of these lesions leads to narrowing of the vessel lumen, a condition known as stenosis, which compromises blood flow and oxygen delivery to vital organs.
