Arterial Function

Meaning

Arterial function refers to the comprehensive physiological performance of the body’s arteries, encompassing their ability to conduct blood flow, regulate vascular tone, and maintain structural integrity. This includes the endothelium’s capacity to produce vasoactive substances like nitric oxide, ensuring appropriate vasodilation and vasoconstriction. Optimal arterial function is critical for regulating systemic blood pressure and ensuring adequate tissue perfusion throughout the body. Compromised function, often termed endothelial dysfunction, represents an early and significant indicator of cardiovascular risk.
