Arterial Compliance

Meaning

Arterial Compliance is a physiological measure that quantifies the elasticity and distensibility of the arterial walls, representing their ability to expand and contract in response to changes in blood pressure during the cardiac cycle. High compliance signifies healthy, flexible arteries that effectively buffer the pulsatile flow of blood, thereby protecting smaller vessels and organs from excessive pressure. Conversely, reduced compliance, often termed arterial stiffness, is a hallmark of cardiovascular aging and a significant, independent risk factor for hypertension and adverse cardiac events.
