Aromatization

Meaning

Aromatization is the irreversible biochemical process where androgens, such as testosterone and androstenedione, are converted into estrogens, specifically estradiol and estrone, respectively. This conversion is catalyzed by the enzyme aromatase, a cytochrome P450 enzyme found in various tissues, including adipose tissue, brain, liver, and gonads. The balance of this enzymatic activity is crucial for maintaining appropriate androgen-to-estrogen ratios, which profoundly impact overall hormonal health.
