Aromatase Upregulation

Meaning

A biological process defined by an increase in the transcriptional expression or functional activity of the aromatase enzyme (CYP19A1) within various bodily tissues, including adipose, hepatic, and gonadal cells. This enhanced enzyme function leads to an accelerated rate of androgen-to-estrogen conversion, resulting in elevated systemic and local estrogen concentrations. Clinically, aromatase upregulation is a key driver in conditions like estrogen dominance, contributing to the pathogenesis of gynecomastia and certain hormone-sensitive disorders.
