Aromatase Excess Syndrome

Meaning

Aromatase Excess Syndrome (AEXS), also known as familial or constitutional aromatase excess, is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the excessive conversion of androgens into estrogens due to overactivity or overexpression of the aromatase enzyme. This pathological increase in estrogen synthesis leads to a state of hyperestrogenism in both males and females. In males, this typically presents as prepubertal gynecomastia and accelerated bone maturation, while in females, it may cause isosexual precocity. The resulting hormonal imbalance requires specific endocrine management to mitigate long-term health consequences.
