Aromatase Activity

Meaning

Aromatase activity refers to the biological rate and efficiency at which the aromatase enzyme (CYP19A1) catalyzes the conversion of androgenic precursors into estrogens within the body. Clinically, assessing this activity provides insight into an individual’s propensity for estrogen synthesis from testosterone and other androgens. Elevated activity can lead to a relative excess of estrogen, potentially resulting in symptoms like gynecomastia in men or estrogen dominance patterns in women. Conversely, insufficient activity, though less common, would impede necessary estrogen production.
