AR-V7

Meaning

A specific, clinically significant splice variant of the Androgen Receptor (AR) that is generated by the inclusion of a cryptic exon (cryptic exon 3) in the final messenger RNA, resulting in a truncated receptor protein. This particular variant is characterized by the complete absence of the ligand-binding domain, rendering it constitutively active and unresponsive to traditional anti-androgen therapies that target the full-length receptor’s ligand-binding site. Detection of AR-V7 in circulating tumor cells serves as a predictive biomarker for resistance to specific prostate cancer treatments.
