AR-Positive TNBC

Meaning

A specific subtype of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) where the cancer cells aberrantly express the Androgen Receptor (AR). TNBC is conventionally defined by the lack of expression of Estrogen Receptor (ER), Progesterone Receptor (PR), and HER2/neu, rendering it typically non-responsive to standard endocrine therapies. The unexpected presence of the AR, a nuclear hormone receptor, offers a potential therapeutic target, shifting the clinical approach for this otherwise challenging breast cancer classification. This subtype represents a crucial area of research in personalized oncology, linking androgen signaling to breast tissue pathology and treatment response.
