Aquaporin-2

Meaning

Aquaporin-2 (AQP2) is a specific type of water channel protein embedded in the apical membrane of the principal cells within the renal collecting ducts of the kidney. This protein is fundamentally responsible for the regulated reabsorption of water from the forming urine back into the bloodstream, a process critical for maintaining systemic fluid balance and plasma osmolality. Its functional presence is a key determinant of the body’s ability to concentrate urine and prevent excessive water loss.
