Appetitive Behavior

Meaning

Appetitive behavior denotes the initial, flexible phase of a motivated behavioral sequence, which is distinct from the final, stereotyped consummatory phase. It encompasses all the searching, investigative, and preparatory actions an organism undertakes to obtain a biological goal object, such as food or a sexual partner. In the context of hormonal health, appetitive behavior is a key indicator of internal drive and motivation. The expression of these behaviors reflects the underlying physiological state and the influence of circulating hormones.
