Apolipoprotein E (APOE)

Meaning

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a lipid-binding protein critical for the transport and metabolism of fats, including cholesterol, within the body. It is synthesized primarily in the liver and brain, playing a central role in the uptake and clearance of various lipoproteins from the bloodstream. Different genetic variations, or alleles, of APOE exist, influencing its function and an individual’s metabolic and neurological health.
