Apolipoprotein B Significance

Meaning

Apolipoprotein B, or ApoB, is the primary structural protein component found on all atherogenic lipoprotein particles, including VLDL, IDL, and LDL, and its concentration is a more precise measure of cardiovascular risk than traditional LDL cholesterol levels. In hormonal health, elevated ApoB indicates a higher circulating number of particles capable of delivering cholesterol into the arterial wall, directly correlating with increased atherosclerotic plaque burden. This process is significantly modulated by endocrine function. It serves as a critical biomarker for assessing metabolic and vascular health, which are intimately linked to sex steroid and thyroid hormone status.
