Apolipoprotein B (ApoB)

Meaning

Apolipoprotein B, or ApoB, is the sole, large structural protein found on the surface of most atherogenic lipoprotein particles, including VLDL, IDL, and crucially, LDL cholesterol. Clinically, the concentration of ApoB is considered a highly informative biomarker for cardiovascular risk because it quantifies the total number of circulating lipoprotein particles capable of infiltrating the arterial wall. Elevated ApoB levels signify an increased burden of these potentially harmful particles, regardless of the cholesterol content within them. Monitoring this marker provides superior precision in assessing cardiometabolic risk.
