Apolipoprotein B

Meaning

Apolipoprotein B, or ApoB, is a structural protein integral to the formation of lipoproteins, specifically VLDL, IDL, LDL, and chylomicrons. It serves as the primary protein component on the surface of these particles, which are responsible for transporting cholesterol and triglycerides throughout the bloodstream. Measuring ApoB provides a precise count of all potentially atherogenic lipoprotein particles, offering a more direct assessment of cardiovascular risk than traditional LDL-C measurement. A higher concentration of ApoB indicates a greater number of circulating atherogenic particles, signifying increased cardiovascular risk.
