ApoE4

Meaning

ApoE4, or Apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 allele, is a specific genetic variant of the APOE gene, which plays a critical role in lipid metabolism and cholesterol transport within the central nervous system and the periphery. Clinically, inheriting one or two copies of the ApoE4 allele is recognized as a significant genetic risk factor for the development of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease and is also associated with distinct cardiovascular risk profiles. Understanding an individual’s ApoE genotype allows for personalized risk stratification and targeted lifestyle or hormonal interventions to potentially mitigate associated neurocognitive and vascular challenges.
