APOEε4

Meaning

APOEε4 refers to the epsilon 4 allele of the Apolipoprotein E gene, a significant genetic risk factor involved in lipid metabolism and neurological health. This specific allele is associated with less efficient clearance of amyloid-beta peptides in the brain, impacting neuroinflammation and synaptic function. Clinically, carrying one or two copies of the APOEε4 allele increases an individual’s predisposition for developing late-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
