Apnea-Hypopnea Index

Meaning

A clinical scoring system used in polysomnography to quantify the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by measuring the number of respiratory events per hour of sleep. The index specifically tallies episodes of apnea, which is a complete cessation of breathing, and hypopnea, a partial reduction in airflow. This metric is fundamental in diagnosing and classifying the severity of a patient’s sleep-disordered breathing.
