Antisperm Antibodies

Meaning

Antisperm antibodies (ASA) are immunoglobulins produced by the immune system that mistakenly target and bind to surface antigens on sperm cells. Their presence indicates an autoimmune response where the body views its own reproductive cells as foreign invaders, a condition known as immunological infertility. These antibodies can be detected in the blood serum, seminal fluid of men, or cervical mucus of women. High concentrations of ASA are a clinically significant factor contributing to unexplained infertility in both male and female partners.
