Antinatriuretic

Meaning

Antinatriuretic describes a physiological effect or a specific substance that acts to decrease the renal excretion of sodium ions (Na+) from the body. This action results in the retention of sodium and, consequently, water within the body’s extracellular fluid volume. Antinatriuretic effects are critical components in the homeostatic regulation of systemic blood pressure and overall fluid balance. Endogenous hormones, such as aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone (ADH), are prime examples of agents that exert potent antinatriuretic activity in the kidney.
